DESIGNING YOUR FAMILY ROOM

Saturday, January 14, 2012

Some family rooms look edgy and modern, whileothers seem coordinated and traditional. Whatever your design style, the familyroom is a place to gather together with those you love. Since the comfort and style of the room helps set the tone for thetime you spend there, make the most of your space. Also, keep in mind, lighting, rooms should be illuminated to accommodate theuser's needs. You will need to divide it upinto activity areas.
Include task lighting, possibly ambient light and natural lighting. (Refer to my previous posts on lighting). And your flooring needs to be durable and easy to keep clean. (Refer to my post on flooring for lots of ideas). And like all rooms, be sure to keep your design balanced.

The family room is designed to be aplace where family and guests gather for group recreation; talking, reading, watching television, and other family/ group activities. It’s an informal allpurpose room. Sometimes, the family room is located adjacent to the kitchen, andat times, flows into it with no visual breaks. Sometimes, a family room hasdoors leading to the back yard or specific outdoor living areas such as a garden, deck, or patio. And for a lucky few, it’s just a room on it’s own.

The distinction between a familyroom, a living room, and a recreation room may be fluid. In homes with morethan one, the living room is usually the more formal room, often reserved forguests and special occasions. The family room is about communication andsharing time together, whether it’s watching television or watching a fireplace.
